The First Communion is a ceremony that takes place within the Catholic church when the child is approximately 7 or 8 years old. Traditionally the children dress up, usually in white, and the family, Godparents and friends get together to celebrate this very special occasion. The ceremony focuses on the childs first reception of the Sacrament of the Holy Eucharist (the drinking of the wine and receiving of the bread). If you’re attending a Holy Communion ceremony, expect to dress as though you were attending a Christening. There will often be a social reception or party afterwards. The Godparents will usually be expected to play a role at the Communion.
